A program to view JPEGs
Surprises in life are fun. Unexpected, very pleasant surprises are rare enough to be a real treat. The Sony Mavica FD-71 has been such a pleasant surprise, and so much fun, that I can no longer imagine not having one. My wife has spent some time as a professional photographer; so when the time came to buy a digital camera for her, I knew not just any one would do. After months of investigation, talking to owners and reading a myriad of reviews, I discovered two things.
First, I became very weary of computer product reviewers who touted the camera they reviewed as “the next great thing” in the beginning of a review, only to list so many problems with the product in the latter part of the review that I couldn’t imagine buying one!
Second, I learned that no matter how good a digital camera is, a decent quality 35mm film camera will outperform it, hands down. Much like the argument that CDs can never sound as good as a decent LP, due to the inherent digital sampling of an analog product, digital images are nothing more than “sampled” pixels of a real image. I decided to center my search on two criteria: Ease of use and battery life. So many of the Mega-pixel cameras seemed to have downloading difficulties and short battery life expectancy that I kept coming back to the Digital Mavica format. When I finally got a chance to use a friend’s older FD-7, I was hooked.
Here’s what you get with the Sony FD-71:
- A comfortable, easily held digital still camera with 330,000 pixel 640x480 resolution.
- 2.5" TFT LCD View Screen with Backlight and On-Screen Controls for all functions
- 10x Optical Zoom - Selectable Auto/Manual Focus - Range .5" - infinity
- Rechargeable “InfoLitium” Ion Battery (Up to 2 hours use with standard battery NP-F330 - Optional NPF-550 offers up to 4 hours use - approx. $50)
- Auto Flash - Selectable Forced Flash/Auto/No Flash
- Storage on 3.5" Floppy Discs - DOS Formatted - 15-40 images per disc depending on mode, flash use, etc. - 2X write-to-disk floppy drive
- Six Exposure Modes - Portrait, Sports, Beach & Ski, Sunset & Moon, Landscape and Panfocus
- Five Effects Modes - Normal, Black & White, Sepia, Negative and Solarize
- The FD-71 comes with a battery charger, shoulder strap and lens cap.
Downtown Warren, Vermont (Is that a “small dog” on the porch?)
The FD-71 has “standard” and “fine” image settings, with “fine” increasing image quality by reducing JPEG compression. The 10x zoom allows for photos from a macro at a half inch out to infinity! It has three recording modes: Normal—for regular photos, E-mail—which adds a 320x240 image for each photo to reduce file size for e-mailing, and Bitmap—a non-compression format for actual pixel photos with a subsequently larger file size. Only one Bitmap image will fit on a floppy.
The Mavica uses regular 3.5" floppies as “film.” They are formatted as DOS disks; and can be read by any PC, or Mac System 7.5 or later with PC exchange. Images are stored as JPEGs; any program that can view JPEGs will work to view your photos. I found the Shareware program Graphic Converter http://www.lemkesoft.de absolutely indispensable.
Using the FD-71 is a snap. Take a floppy full of photos (15-40 depending on flash, mode, exposure, etc.), copy them to your hard drive, and view them in the GraphicConverter “Browser” mode. The FD-71's on-screen controls take a little getting used to; the small buttons invite an occasional “Oops” if you push the wrong one. Once you are familiar with it, you can use the FD-71 as a simple point-and-shoot camera; or you can adjust the settings for whatever your project demands.
The 2.5" LCD Screen is the viewfinder, where you frame your shots or view photos after they are taken. If you don’t like a particular shot, you can simply erase it from within the screen, and try another. You can erase a photo immediately after it is taken, or later if you want to conserve space. You can also format a disk while it is in the camera, in case you only have Mac-formatted floppies available. There is a “copy” function which makes a duplicate of any floppy that is in the camera. We have found this handy on vacation; if we wish we can give our subjects a copy to take home with them! The on-screen display also informs you of disk space available, battery time remaining, exposure mode, picture effects, and image quality.
There are six different exposure modes:
Soft Portrait - For soft background portraits and accurate skin tones.
Sports Lesson - Faster shutter speed for fast-moving subjects.
Beach & Ski - Proper exposure in strong light, such as the beach or ski slope. Sunset & Moon - For dark environments like sunsets, fireworks, neon signs, etc. Landscape Mode - For distant objects or shooting through a window or screen. Panfocus Mode - Proper exposure for quick shots or flash use in the dark.
There are also five different picture effects modes:
Normal - For regular use.
Negative Art - The color and brightness of the photo is reversed.
Sepia - The picture will be in Sepia tone (all warm browns and tans,
like old Tin Type pictures).
Black and White - The picture will be monochrome (Black and White).
Solarize - Colors are rendered as blocks and posterized.
The Mighty Guard Dog Hammerli
The FD-71 is infinitely adjustable allowing you to tailor your photos to your needs. You can also use the FD-71 for Web image recording; the JPEGs can be uploaded or e-mailed with ease. Its cross-platform support, ease of use and quality of image makes the FD-71 a perfect choice for those who want to purchase a digital camera that won’t be obsolete next week. I was delighted with the image quality, color accuracy, and overall “enjoyability” of the Mavica.
I have two criticisms of the Mavica. I find the LCD screen-as-a-viewfinder takes some getting used to. Unlike using a 35mm camera, you must hold the camera away from you to frame your photo, and you sometimes get a larger image than you framed. If this camera had a through-the-lens viewfinder it would be an absolute winner. Second, it is very difficult to get enough light at night to auto-focus the camera; the Panfocus mode is suggested for these situations.
Macro Photo of Modem Circuit Board
As this review went to press, I noticed that the FD-71 is being discounted (as low as $550!) by a number of On-Line merchants. This usually indicates that a model is being discontinued, which would be a real shame. There are two new Sony models out - the FD-81 and FD-91 - possibly indicating an end to the FD-71. If you can get a deal on an FD-71, by all means, grab one. You will not be disappointed, nor will you find a camera that does so much for so relatively little. It gets my highest recommendation.
If you are planning on purchasing a Mavica, or already own one, you should visit a couple of interesting Web sites I’ve discovered in the process of writing this review. There is an excellent Mavica owner’s e-zine called “Mav!” available at http://webhome.idirect.com/~mavmag/.
Also, there is a Shareware program called “Mavicadabra! v1.1" that can help you download, catalogue, convert, and name your Mavica photos. It’s available at http://www.kagi.com/griffin/mavica.html.

Another way to find a repair center is to do what I just did to look up Southern Photo's phone number. I used Yahoo!'s Yellow Pages site, changed the location to Orlando, searched for "Southern Photo," then clicked their link. On the resulting page was a list of related categories where I found "Photographic Equipment - Repairing." Then, just change your location using the link at the top, and you'll get a list of places closer to you.
Good luck.

There are also tips for basic troubleshooting on his site and he also can talk you through some basic stuff via e-mail prior to sending a camera to him.
He's sort of THE recommended Mavica repair shop (other than Sony, which will be a lot more expensive and a lot slower).
If not, scroll up to the second comment that was posted to this page, April 14, 2002.
give me a hint in how to fix it , and how much will it cost if i can't get it working.
Dropped Mavica digital camera. When camera is turned on the screen is dark; you can hardly see what you're taking a picture of, but it still takes a clear picture. Help!
Regards,
Rick.
One other notable factor was that my clock was set to 2074 instead of 2004, is this indicative of anything?
Where and how much, near Detroit Mi.?
Thanks,
Trish in Battle Creek, MI
Their web site is at www.MavicaService.homestead.com if you are interested in getting your camera repaired right the first time.

Can you offer any assistance. I am in the Metro-Detroit, MI area.
Dad is not very happy with the fact that i lost the kit, and has asked me to learn to use the cam on my own!!
PLEASE HELP ME OUT !:)
I see quite a few of you want to know what happens to these units when they get dropped.
I am a technician, working for AVRepair.com. Have seen many, many mavica's, all for the dreaded disk read error, or the C:13:01.
Here's the technical details, and if you want to try to align the drives yourself, have at it!
There is a sensor to detect the position of the head so that the tracks can be recorded in their proper place, and so that your home computer can read these tracks. The sensor that detects the position of the heads has ONE screw and has only one-drop of glue to hold it (the alignment) in place. If the drive suffers a shock or drop, the alignment of this sensor will be off, and the drive will no longer read the disk, or will seem to work, but then the disk cannot be read by your computers floppy drive.
Now, here is where the tricky part comes in. If you were to simply 'play' with the position of this sensor by loosening the screw, you could get the mavica to once again start taking pictures, but be careful, the alignment has been factory set so that the disk will record the tracks in the proper place. Get the alignment out too far in either direction, and the mavica might be able to read it's own disks, but your computer will not recognize the disk. The alignment must be within +/-10 microns of the correct position, or the drive may not work properly. Do you realize how small of an adjustment this is? 10 microns is roughly 2 or 3 strands of hair!
So, it's the alignment of the drive that gets out of whack. There are repair shops that 'attempt' to put the drive back in alignment, but the jigs to align these floppy drives cost $3000.00 each. There are 4 different floppy drives for the mavicas. No service center here in the US has any of these jigs.
We, here at AVRepair.com, simply replace the drives. If we were to attempt to align the drives, there would be errors in either reading or writing to the disk.
It is therefore in the customers best interest, to simply replace the floppy drive.
We charge $60.00 in labor to change the drive, and the drives cost $90.00. This is valid for almost all of the mavica models. The total repair of $150.00 includes cleaning AND return shipping.
Fair price wouldnt you say?
Best wishes,
Cameron
Thanks

I need another part from it thats all.

Otherwise, try http://local.yahoo.com/ plug in your zip code and try keywords such as camera repair.
There is a place in Orlando called Southern Photo Technical Services that came up for my search. I've used them before--great team there.
Thanks,
Tammy
By the way I have repaired a lot of VCR problems the same way- open them up and swab everything with alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol) soaked q tips.
also is it worth it to spend the money??
714-701-1750 email is [email protected]. His ebay user ID is royace. He guarantees all his work and gets them back to you fast.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! [email protected]
I have the Mavica also and I love it just got it about a month ago never have used it cause I can't get a disk in
HELPPPPPPPPP ME PLEACE.....

I have advice for some no cost to you repairs and I sell new and used parts for these popular cameras.
Will check back daily,
Paul
I then removed the 5 very tiny screws on the back of the floppy. I cleaned everything I could reach with Mineral spirits and dry cloth. I wrapped the cloth around the screw driver and sprayed with the Mineral spirits. Alcohol would also work. Both dry quickly. So far, so good. It's working again!
Now I clean my floppies before inserting in camera.
There are two small switchs near the floppy door on each side of the FDD (Floppy Disk Drive) that are mounted on the lens side. Try holding the door open with a book of matches, inserting the pointy end first and gently pressing the matchbook in, and using a small screwdriver, press on these switches to see if they function. If they do, insert a floppy and try to put some pressure on the floppy toward the lens and turn the camera on. If the camera now reads the floppy, an adjustment to the FDD might repair this problem. If you continue to get the "Disk Protected" message, the switch or FDD will need replacement.
MavicaMedic at gmail dot com
It worked ! HA...hope it keeps working too
Slap! Slap! Slap!
I tried the bang and slap technique and was shocked that it worked for me as well. Amazing!!
Thanks for the odd but effective solution!!
Every since, the display simply says NO DISK no matter what disk I put in it. The click that floppy drives make when the disk is inside...well I don't hear that.
So now I'm reading the comment about wacking the camera . So I tried it and guess what??? It reads the floppy, but now I have the infamous C:13:10 error.
So I guess all I want to know is this...do I need to get the floppy drive replaced ?
Pauk
Where can I get a floppy drive for a mavica.
Who has the cheapest prices?I am going to try and clean it.But,,I have had it a real long time.
Do they make a floppy drive cleaner?
Nobody I know of discounts them.
They are available from a number of online parts stores.

The fact that you used 'Cameron II', just tipped your hand, as to the integrity, reliability and trustworthiness, of both you and the company that you represent.
Let this be a notice to all readers of your intent, in that, if this is the way you behave in this small mater, of how much more so would you behave with someone's money?
As it is, people are concerned about sending their units to someone they do not know. Take note, readers: BUYER BEWARE
The published rate on my site, www.avrepair.com, to replace a floppy drive in most models of FD mavica's is $150.00, which includes cleaning, a six-month warranty, AND return shipping.
Hard to beat.

Thanks,
Both of you gentlemen offer SONY MAVICA Camera repairs online and I think both your sites are infomative and helpful. MAVICA users, especially MVC Floppy Drive users, have been stopping by, asking for help and offering to pay for repairs here since early 2002. Why not use this URL to offer your services? ATPM will not release the posters e-mail so in order to respond to a question you must post your answer in a message here.
Who am I? Obviously not Cameron III. I'm a MAVICA Floppy Disk Drive user/lover/buyer/seller that will answer questions if sent to mavicamedic at comcast dot net. Tim should also know me as NorthEast_ChileMan at MIE http://www.mavican.org/. Cameron doesn't know me from Adam but I've reccomended people I can't help to his site as well as Tim's. There's plenty of Sony's that need repair boyz!!!!
Also known as Paul Karpowicz
There is a switch inside the drive that detects when a disk is inserted. Since the amount of labor that it takes to disassemble the drive costs more than the drive itself, it's best to simply replace the drive. The drive costs $90.00, with labor at $60.00, totaling $150.00 for the repair.
Repairs include cleaning / lubrication, a six-month warranty and return shipping. Please pack the unit with at least 4" of packing material on ALL sides, insure it, and ship to:
AVRepair
723 NE 412 Ave
Old Town, FL 32680
Once received, we'll send you an email confirming your unit's safe arrival. Then, within a couple of business days we'll send you another email confirming the cost of repair, and request of payment. At that time you can call us with your credit card information. We do take other forms of payment, however CC's are the most convenient.
Please let us know if you've any questions.
Thank you,

Disk Write Protect switch is on the left lower corner, Disk In switch lower right corner.
I say, replace the drive the first time. Heck, it's got lots of hours on it. What will happen? The camera will work for the next decade, and the customer will be happy.
Name of the game is happy customer. Money will follow.

I think My wife was trying to insert a disk when one was in there and bent somthing, but that's just what I think.
Anyways, It doesn't happen every time and I've gotten quite used to dealing with the flaw and would surely use it as it is before spending that kind of money.
MavicaMedic Thank You so much for saying somthing other than, send it to me and for $150 I'll fix it, LOL You are truely helpful.
Cameron I'd rather pay someone $60 bucks to clean the switch and take my chances, then I would to part with $150, but that's just me, I'm a cheap bastard. Thanks anyway.
Now, just where did you get that $60.00 figure?
Replacement of the drive from me is $60.00, and I'm the cheapest anywhere. THAT price is a special, and is for drive replacement ONLY. If you wanted the switch cleaned, it would be $90.00. And that is from me, and I guarantee most places charge more, AND then you still have return shipping.
So, now your saving what, about $40 bucks?! Do you really think skimping on that little bit is worth it now?
Like I said, it's better to change the drive, in most cases, but it is your money...
Cameron
I thouroughly cleaned everything inside with q-tips and electrical cleaning fluid and a can of air (both wal-mart), I then put everything back where it goes (I used a sketch pad to draw diagrams so I'd remember what went where), Let it sit about an hour to throughly dry and fired it up, I can't get it to not recognize the disk, meaning: it's 100% fixed.
Thank You all so much for your time and Mavicamedic for your pics and advice. You rock and me and my Mavica will keep on Rockin' on!
Cameron... I was just using $60.00 as an example. Of coures I would exspect you to be higher, I wasn't trying to imply you'd ever give a good deal. Rock On Cameron.
Good-Day! MVC-FD87=#1
First, you told everyone here that your camera was an FD87, which is quite old.
Not everyone can open these things up and do the work him or herself; they have no choice but to choose a professional service center.
When choosing, they need to know what kind of service to expect, and hope that the person performing the service would go 'the extra mile', so they would have reliable service for the foreseeable future- not just make a quick buck to give someone a good deal that will only last for the short term.
You said it took you a couple of hours. (yes, yes, you took your time...) The going rate for an hour is well over $95.00.
The testimonials on my site speaks for itself.
In the last year, and several thousand repairs, I have had TWO returns for warranty service.
Tell me who the satisfied customers are.

For all we know, you inadvertently tore one of the ribbon cables inside the camera when you opened it up to repair it yourself, and now the camera is never going to work….

The FD200 does have issues with defective CCD imagers. Though typically when a CCD is going defective, it stays that way.
Also, the drive could have dirty heads, and the disks your using may not be of the highest quality.
All of this is just speculation, but it wouldn't hurt to buy a cleaning disk, and use it according to the directions. Also, brand name disks work better than dollar store varieties.
If you still have problems, feel free to contact me at [email protected]
All the best,

If you've tried brand new disks, fresh out of the box, that you have personally taken the wrapper off of, and the drive still doesn't work properly, then it's time for a new floppy drive.
As mentioned above, the costs for drive replacements are $90.00 for the drive, and $60.00 for labor, totaling $150.00 for the repair (most models). Repairs include cleaning/ lubrication, a six-month warranty and return shipping.
Do try the new disks as it is a common problem.
I can be reached at [email protected]

Any Ideas? Please?
Since the rest of the camera is working, and the unit does playback pictures fine, that means there is a problem in the circuit that process the information that gets sent to the LCD screen, from the camera section.
80-90% of the time, faults such as these can be attributed to 'cold solder', otherwise known as loose connections. Re-flowing of the solder in the affected area alleviates the problem.
Other times, the problem will have to be troubleshot down to the component that is defective.

BUT!!!
I need a zoom button/switch anyone here know where/how I can get one and how much $$ I'll have 5to pay? thanks You All!!
I need a zoom slider lever too! Where can i get one? Will it snap right in or what?
TBubble
Like a bad cold, your problems will return- just a matter of time. Murphy's Law dictates that the problem will return, just when you need it most...
**Do be careful when attempting self-repair. You can total your camera very quickly - You have been warned**
As for the zoom lever, it's a two-piece assembly that snaps together. Chances are, the inside piece is floating around, and may be damaged.
Both pieces cost $5.00 each + shipping.
The outside piece is part # 307301011. The inside piece is part # 307301101. Goto www.tritronicsinc.com for parts ordering.
Trouble, as for your LCD problem, does it light up, or is it black?
Post your response for further information.

I stopped in my local pawn shop today and bought a good working used FD71 with charger and battery for 39.95.
So, I have a backup if mine ever dies. it sure beats repair cost :)
It may be a good idea to check your local pawn shops!!!!
This is a common problem, and is more than likely due to a shock or a drop.
It's referred to as 'bad electrical connections', as the flex cable that goes to the CCD board, has become unseated. The CCD board is located directly behind the lens, and contains the CCD imager.
The disassembly of the unit is quite difficult. By attempting self-repair you are taking risks on damaging the camera further, so you have been warned.
If you prefer professional help, my contact information can be found in several posts above.

Mavica, glad cleaning your camera helped!
Margaret, read through this column for previous posts like these:
The FD83 and FD88 cannont use the floppy adapter, period.
FD100/200 users with broken zoom buttons, it is not a simple matter to replace it. After seperation of the case halves, disconnecting the ribbon cable, removing the floppy drive and removing the shutter button, you can see where it goes on the inside of the case. It is self latching with hooks that are molded on the button and hook onto the internal portion of the button that moves the switch you removed with the shutter button. Sound confusing? Contact Tim at http://www.mavicaservice.homestead.com/Service.html and Cameron at [email protected] if you want a professional estimate for repair of this condition. Contact me at mavicamedic at gmail dot com for any other non-professional advice like selling you used parts for your camera, buying your broken floppy disk SONY camera or advice on buying/selling a camera like yours on eBay to repair/replace yours.
I have a Mavica MVC-FD200.
When I turn on the power, the light turns green, but the camera does not turn on. If I take out the battery and re-insert, the same thing happens. I have two batteries and it is the same thing with them both. I use the power cord, and same thing. Any advice?
Thanks
Common problem. This has happened, due to a shock or a drop. The internal power supply was shorted out from that shock, and an internal circuit protector has opened.
The unit needs to be professionally serviced. You can expect to pay around $100.00, for this type of repair.
You can contact me at [email protected], or feel free to use the service center of your choice.

That error indicates a bad lens, hence the reason why you can't zoom. The lens is defective, and will more than likely have to be replaced.
The lens is expensive, at $155.00, and then you have labor. A more effective solution would be to use a scrap lens assembly. This would save you quite a bit of money, and make the repair reasonable.
My contact information can be found on ATPM, by simply looking at previous posts. Contact me, if your interested. The other alternative would be to send the unit directly to Sony. They have flat labor rates, and they may cover the lens replacement.

As Mavica did back in March I bought an aerosol can of Electric Contact Cleaner from a NAPA parts center, put a few drops in each switch, used a presurized co2 sprayer from Radio Shack & sprayed air in them..... Fixed 3 cameras with NO DISK, DISK PROTECT errors.
Christine, you are correct, if you have a constant WRITE PROTECTED error message there is a possibility that this function was turned on in the MENU of the camera.
Cyndi, It can be fixed by replacing the Floppy Disk Drive at about $200. Please read through this entire discussion for help on how to fix it for much less. Contact me at MavicaMedic at gmail dot com for further advice. Contact Cameron for replacement.... Paul
Am going to bookmark your site. I need a new lens for an FD-92. Thanks
Maureen, Floppy Disk Drive cleaners are available at STAPLES, especially their website..
It won't work in the FD5/FD51/FD7/FD71/FD73/FDFD75/FD81/FD83/FD88/FD91 as the Floppy Disk Drive in those cameras is not compatabile.
I's not needed in the FD92/FD97/FD100/FD200 cameras as they have a slot built in for the memory stick.

The best place to find used chargers is ebay. Originals are best, but generics work well.
When selecting items on ebay, do check out the sellers feedback, and read the auction carefully, paying attention to S&H charges, which can cost more than charger itself!

My newly ebay purchased fd91 takes very very dakr pictures, I have played with the AE settings and EV, but it cannot be changed, I am beginning to suspect my ccd sensor is fried. What do I do now? Thanks. Ben
My name is Al and I am having a problem with my MVC-FD200. When I try to turn it on the green LED light flashes quickly but the camera does not turn on and if I keep trying to turn it on nothing happens. If I take out the battery then reinsert it and try to turn the camera on the power LED flashes again but the camera will not turn on.
Does anyone know how to fix the problem??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Al
Your camera can be repaired for under $75.00 from sellers on eBay. If you send an email to mavicamedic at gmail dot com I can fix it for $40.00 and that includes return S and H..
"NO DISK" is usually caused by a switch inside thw floppy disk drive that needs cleaning. Yes, the camera will function fine with a memory stick.
If the procedure for resetting the camera fails please read through the information others have left in this column, especially Posts # 48/67/72/73/101/105/122...
You can contact me at mavicamedic at gmail dot com if you'd like.
Hope this helps anyone with similar problem.
Thanks for your help!
