A few years back, the release of the original Unreal introduced a new echelon of first-person shooters, featuring outstanding graphics and a creepy and high-tension combination of story line and game design. Unreal Tournament (UT) takes the Unreal concept and moves it to arena combat, akin to the deathmatch games of the Quake series (which leads to things like this; can’t we all just get along?).
Gameplay
The purpose of UT is simple. Survive in the arena and accumulate as many opponent kills, or “frags,” as you can by taking out as many trigger-happy opponents as possible while avoiding the same fate yourself. Each arena map is littered with weapons, armor, and player enhancements, allowing you to “power up” your character along the way.
Wreaking Havoc With the Minigun
A typical match ends when a player reaches a set number of frags and/or a certain amount of time elapses, or a player reaches a predetermined goal. Some matches are free-for-all, but others feature opposing teams.
A one-player version of UT is included, which consists of a training stage and a number of arena combats against “bots” (computer-controlled opponents).
Training Mode
You can spend a while honing your skills in one-player mode, but most players will eventually join a multi-player UT game through either a local area network (LAN) or the Internet. Support for both methods is included, and the game tracks available-to-join LAN or Internet games. You can even choose to host your own game that others join.
An Internet UT Server List
Graphics
Ooo! Pretty! The first thing you’ll notice about UT is the smooth, high-gloss look of the arenas and players, showing off the updated graphics engine also used by games such as Deus Ex. I used the baseline 450 Mhz Cube as my play machine, and had no hiccups or problems with up to the 800x600 setting on its ATI Rage 128 video card. Try out different video settings to find what works best for you, as CPU and video card speeds will affect your results.
Mods
Another feature of UT is the ability to use game modifications, or “mods,” which are new arenas or game items created by fellow gamers. The list of available mods is rather large. A search for “Unreal” on Macgamefiles.com returned over 100 related files, most of which are new arenas or mod utilities. Mod quality varies widely, but they keep the game fresh by adding a new look and feel once you’ve seen all that the basic game has to offer.

Overall
At $19.99 this edition of UT is a painless way to satisfy your trigger finger for a long time. If you made the initial choice between Quake 3 and UT and went with Quake, this is a good way to see what you missed. The better Mac gaming climate means better Mac games, and this choice of first-person shooters is a good example. I prefer UT’s weapons “feel” myself, and will probably spend more time behind the UT rocket launcher over the long term.

I assume your connection is cable or DSL. Most of these connections have good download speeds (in excess of 1 Mbit/s), but the upload speed is not so great (around 200-400 kbit/s). Unreal is a complex game; to be lag-free, a lot of data needs to go back and forth between the computers. The problem is that your connection cannot send the data fast enough to the other computers on the Internet. That creates the lag.
Do not confuse the bandwidth problem with the latency problem (usually referred to by the "ping"). The ping is the time it takes for a signal to travel from one computer to the other and back. High latency will also cause the game to lag.
To make a long story short, if you want to play with less lag, you need to get a better Internet connection. What are you connecting with right now?
If you ask around, you'll find that many gaming servers are run on computers sitting at places of employment using their bandwidth. People's ability to do this generally is because they are either running the IT department, have an arrangement with the IT department to run the server in the evening when the office doesn't need the bandwidth, or they're doing it regardless whether IT staff care.
I get the same glitch someone else mentioned with the High Speed map. The game hangs up using that map on two different machines running OS 8.6 and 9.2, respectively. Does anyone know if there's a fix out there?
Does anyone know how to fix it?
However, if one of your discs is defective, you should be able to take it back to where you bought it (or send it back, if mail order) for a replacement. Although, if the damage is due to your own neglect and not because of a defect from the manufacturer, then yes, you'd probably have to buy it again.
Another staff member had this to say:
"Another problem might be that he simply doesn't have enough bandwidth left with two people using the line. Most broadband connections have limited upload such as 368k or less. If you share that between two machines, you don't have enough upload bandwidth to prevent lag. You can tell I spend too much time on FPSs. :)"
I don't have GOTY, so someone more experienced may have a workaround for you. However, what I am able to tell you is that if having the CD turns out to be the only way you can apply the patch, and since ATPM.com does not condone or permit comments discussing sharing copyrighted software (meaning, don't ask for someone here to send you a copy), you're liable to have to either try convincing the software author that you own a copy and see about acquiring a replacement disc, or simply go buy the game again and hang on to the CD this time.
Peace

I got Unreal Tournament GOTY with 2 cd's...but I cant install it off the CD :( I downloaded the 436 patch but I keep getting an error message when I try to install it. Basically I need to know how to install UT GOTY on MacOS X. PLEASE help.
thx
But I still think there good games though.
SHOCK RIFLE RULES
UNREAL TOURNAMENT GOTY ROCKS!!!!!
"For those who have owned Unreal Tournament since its initial release, and have probably re-installed the game once or twice, they understandably are all too knowledgeable with the process that the installation involves. Not only do you wait several minutes for several hundred megabytes of data to copy to your hard drive, but that is followed by updating to the latest version (sometimes requiring multiple updates), adding some of those favorite mods and the hundreds of third-party maps that they've accumulated over time. With Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition, the latest version of the game is installed from the CD, saving valuable download time and hassles. This is key for players using ISDN internet connection or slower. Further saving time, two mods (Rocket Arena and ChaosUT) are installed by default in addition to the three official map packs that were previously released by Epic Games and Digital Extremes."
Thus, if you're installing the full game from the CD without needing huge update versions and have the extra mods, you've got the GOTY edition.

Everyone knows that the redeemer is the best!!
i would delete it from your system folder and try re-downloading it.
Finding a Windows copy of UT GOTY is proving to be more and more difficult though. I guess all the Mac people with new Intel machines are buying up the last remaining copies!
is amazing. And I want this game type , real person weapons everytime.

quality is very in depth.
I remember about 7 or 8 years ago, I was able to play a version of the game where you could set up turrets or something, little machines that would just sit there and shoot at anything that moved.
I can't quite remember what mutators or whatever, or what buttons or commands allowed for this for turrets to be used.
Any help?

We have fixes for MOST UT99 / GOTY problems!
Servers also!
my email - [email protected]
We are the last bastion for UT99/goty!
Are those fixes for the Mac version of UT99, cause this article just happens to be about the PPC Mac version for Mac OS 9 and not the windows PC version.
there was a Patch to Make the Mac OS 8/9 version to be played in OS X (not classic mode) but it has allot of bugs and makes the game play no good.
so far i have not seen anything about the Mac version on your forums but i am still looking.
What ProofyBoy was asking doesn't matter which version it is!
There are many settings that are for BOTH versions (Mac and PC) like the ini files etc.
His "master server" that he mentioned above is outdated and gone.
You can add New master servers that are up and running that the game does not come with.
We have been dealing with UT since 1999 and IF we can't help, we surely will try to find someone who will. :)
Any help?
Thanks
That is because you have to point the GOTY install to the directory you installed unreal Tournament to. if you have the orignal unreal that will not work, you have to have Unreal Tournament installed before you can install GOTY.
The Second Disc is only for a long gone PC graphics card.
I wouldn't even load the 2nd disc.
It is NOT recommended!
Disc ONE is ALL you need!
I'm getting older, slower and less smart. Games shoudn't be to complicated so I prefer the old games like Wolfenstein, DukeNukem and Unreal.
If you can move a mouse and click to shoot - you can easily play UT99 (aka GOTY)
Dew, I have seen your dilemma before but I do not know why it happens!?!? :(
At least without know specifics!

wow for a buck cant beat it.
If you're adventuresome, we published an article a few years ago about ways to restore the ability to run OS 9 on an Intel Macintosh: http://www.atpm.com/12.09/classic.shtml
